FAQ

SELFi was developed in response to a need to work with groups of young people who were struggling with their emotional and behavioural regulation, and who were also more engaged when tasks had a physical aspect to them. It was felt that key elements of emotional literacy[1] and cognitive behavioural principles would be helpful for them to understand and develop their regulation skills, however these needed to be delivered in a way that was both accessible and motivating. SELFi is grounded in evidence based psychological concepts, aimed at providing psychoeducation and increasing emotional self-understanding to this group of students. [1] The ability to appraise and regulate emotions in oneself and others and use emotions to guide thinking and solve problems (Salovey & Mayer, 1990).
What is the rationale for this intervention?
Who is the intervention aimed at?
SELFi is primarily aimed at young people in upper Key Stage 2 (9 – 11 years) and Key Stage 3 (11 – 13 years) however, it can be adapted for older participants too. Due to the emotional and intra-personal reflection required by some of the activities included in this version of intervention, SELFi would not currently be suitable for children in Key Stage 1. It should be emphasised that SELFi is primarily an early intervention to develop emotional literacy and regulation. It is not intended to address deeper seated, long-term emotional issues, significant behavioural issues or replace the need for individualised therapeutic intervention. There is a criteria sheet included in the manual which can be used as a basis for ascertaining the appropriateness of potential participants
Who can deliver the intervention?
The intervention can be delivered by school staff, including Teaching Assistants, PE teachers, or Pastoral Leads, who have completed the SELFi practitioner training. Additionally, external sports coaches trained in our specific curriculum can deliver the program to ensure professional psychoeducational standards are met. This variety in delivery options allows schools to choose the best fit for their internal resources or work with trusted external partners to achieve the desired outcomes. There are elements of physical activities included throughout this intervention, as such Facilitators need to be physically able to demonstrate and support participants with these activities.
What does the training involve?
The one-day SELFi Facilitator training provides an understanding of the psychoeducational principles underlying the sessions in this intervention. Facilitators should not undertake delivering this intervention if they have not had the necessary SELFi training. A Facilitator manual, alongside relevant slides and resources for delivering the intervention are shared as part of the training. Supervision is also offered to groups of Facilitators at two time points during the intervention delivery.
What does the intervention cover?
Every session involves tasks to reinforce key emotional literacy learning points through discussion, physical activities and grounding exercises. The intervention also encourages students to set and monitor personal goals related to developing their own emotional awareness and self-regulation. Sessions cover the following: 1.Enrol and Set a Goal: Introducing the intervention and related activities. 2.Name it to Tame it: Exploring different emotions and triggers. 3.Feel it to Deal with it: Noticing different physical feelings linked to emotions. 4.I Caught a Thought: Becoming more aware of thoughts – helpful and unhelpful. 5.Spot the ANT: Identifying Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTs). 6.Think about the LinkRecognising links between thoughts, feelings, behaviours. 7.Reframe the Game: Developing ways to regulate emotions 8.Coach Your Approach: Understanding ways to regulate behaviour. 9.C’mon Sam, Have a Plan: Reviewing and planning for new goals.
How is the intervention delivered?
SELFi is delivered as part of a small group intervention (up to 6 participants), although this group size can be amended if additional facilitators are involved. As there is integration of sports related activities throughout the sessions, the intervention could be considered more motivating for those who prefer an active approach to intervention and are interested in football and/or sports.
Where can the intervention be run?
The intervention requires access to a quiet room for ‘knowledge sharing and practical activities’ at the start of each session. There are videos and slides to support the sessions, so a room with access to a whiteboard where the slides can be shared is essential. Every session includes physical activities towards the end of the session – as such access to a gym or outdoor space and equipment (e.g., balls, cones etc) is needed as part of this intervention.
There are 9 sessions intended to be delivered on a weekly or twice weekly basis. The sessions take approximately 60 minutes each. A pre- and post- assessment session would need to be built into the intervention time scale (just before the start and very shortly after completion).
How often is the intervention run?
How is the intervention assessed?
This intervention is intended to develop emotional awareness, cognitive appraisal, emotional and behavioural regulation. The SELFi rating scale is completed by student, parent/carer and school professional prior to and after the intervention to evaluate impact. It is recommended that at least one other questionnaire (e.g., the SDQ) should also be considered for pre- and post- assessment. Evaluation reports can be provided by FlourishMind based on assessment data received from the Facilitators, Parents/Carers and School Professionals.
